Frequently Asked Questions

Here are a few common questions that are asked about playing bag pipes:

Will I be playing bagpipes right away?

Not really. The first step is learning the basic scale on a practice chanter. The practice chanter is a reed instrument, quite similar-looking to the recorder. There are a few steps to go through before playing the great highland bagpipe, and all will be taught patiently in our bagpiping program.

What is a good time frame before I will be playing bagpipes?

It depends. If you push yourself, it is possible to be on bagpipes after the first year, but mastering the blowing, and playing, will take years. Patience is very important.

What kind of a band is South Shore Pipes and Drums?

South Shore Pipes and Drums is a community band. We ensure no student is left behind.

Will I learn music theory?

Yes, music theory is crucial when learning how to pipe and drum.

I don't want to learn, but I want to support the band. How may I do so?

We have an Executive Team that is always looking for help. You may also sponsor a student.
